Position Summary

The Grant Accountant, under the direction of the Controller, will serve as the primary liaison for finance and program staff. The Grant Accountant will be responsible for budgeting and analyzing program expenses, monitoring funds availability, financial reporting, assisting with annual program budgets, responding to program audit requests, and assisting in the development of cost proposals. The Grant Accountant will be responsible for researching and processing accounts receivables-related entries in the accounting system.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with analysis and budgeted allocation of indirect costs
  • Develop a thorough understanding of project operations, revenues, expenditures, and grant compliance requirements
  • Monitor and analyze project results with a focus on proactively quantifying and forecasting surplus, deficits and unfunded activities.
  • Analyze project performance compared to budget and grant compliance
  • Assist program directors in forecasting program requirements, develop budgets for proposals, and prepare reports to programs and donors regarding use of funds
  • Analyze grant expenses to insure alignment with grant requirements and budgets. Notify staff in advance of issues such as budget overages
  • Coordinate with the Controller to ensure that grants revenues are properly recognized under the appropriate grants and programs in the accounting system in accordance with established budgets
  • Update the data in the online financial portal and set up and maintain grants in the accounting system
  • Maintain a schedule of grant financial reports due dates and work with other accounting staff as well as development and field staff on preparing the required financial reports and notes prior to due dates
  • Create and maintain a catalogue of frequently used files for funder requests and update organizational profile on-line
  • Assist in creation of grant invoices. Oversee entry of grant invoices and accounts receivables adjustments in Solomon
  • Assist in annual budget development
  • Assist with audit requests related to programs

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in business or related field required
  • 3 - 5 years of experience in an accounting or finance role
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to identify and correct problems as they occur
  • Understanding of nonprofit grant accounting functions essential
  • Attention to detail and accuracy and self-reviewing work
  • Excellent oral and written communication plus solid organizational and people skills
  • Self-directed and motivated, able to manage multiple and complex assignments and meet deadlines and production schedules both independently and as part of a team
  • Prior experience in administering federal grants
  • Knowledge of applicable federal regulations (FAR, OMB Circulars, and AIDAR)
  • Ability to meet deadlines and juggle multiple priorities; Passion for the outdoors
